Just like any other domestic appliance, vacuum cleaners need some general maintenance and TLC from time to time. This ensures that they continue working to their full potential, and last for many years! Whether it’s a dirty filter, pet hair tangled around the brush roll or a clog in the cannister, you should thoroughly clean your vacuum cleaner at least once a year. Learn how in our step-by-step guide:
What you’ll need to clean out your vacuum:
- Scissors
- Microfibre cloth
- Hot soapy water in a bucket
- New dust bag (optional)
- New filter (optional)
-
Remove and clean the cannister
If you own a bagless vacuum cleaner, empty out the dirt from the cannister and give it a good wipe around with a microfibre cloth and hot soapy water. Check for any larger items which may be stuck in the machine. If you have a bagged vacuum, replace the dust bag if needed, or simply remove it while you clean out where the bag usually sits. Leave everything to dry in a warm place.
-
Clean or replace the filters
Every vacuum cleaner has a filter, which can usually be removed to either wash or replace. We recommend changing your vacuum filter every 6-12 months depending on how frequently you use it. In the meantime, you can easily clean your filter by tapping the dust off into the bin and washing with warm water, you can even rinse it under the tap. Make sure the filter is properly dry before putting it back into the machine.
-
Untangle the brush roll
It is likely that the brush roll on your vacuum cleaner will get strands of hair or thread wrapped around it. If left for a long time this can even stop the roll from spinning properly and could cause long-term damage to the machine. Use a pair of scissors to cut through the pieces of debris and pull them off the brush roll with your hands. Some vacuums allow you to completely remove the brush roll, making this process much easier.
-
Clean attachment accessories
Take off any additional accessories from your machine and remove excess dust and debris. In the same way as you cleaned your cannister, wash accessories down with hot soapy water and a microfibre towel.
-
Wipe down the exterior
Finally, make sure your vacuum is also looking fabulous on the outside. Scrub down the unit with your microfibre towel and hot soapy water (you may need some fresh water). Put everything back together and you’re ready to go!
