How to clean your car using a high pressure washer
The most efficient method to clean your car is with a high pressure washer, we’ll take you through it step-by-step… How to clean your car using a high pressure washer Did you know you should wash your car every 2-4 weeks to keep it in tip-top condition? Cars are prone to getting dirty from all sorts of things such as bugs, road grit, tree sap, bird droppings, and general wear and tear. During the winter months, your car will be in even more need of a deep clean with higher chances of getting covered in mud in the cold, wet weather. One way to wash your car at home is using a hosepipe and a mop and bucket, but hose pipe pressure levels are quite low and it takes a lot of elbow grease to fully remove the dirt and mud from your vehicle. The most efficient method is to use a high pressure washer to clean your car, we’ll take you through it step-by-step… Step 1 – Spray your car with foam using your high pressure washer Add car wash foam to the detergent bottle/foam sprayer on your high pressure washer and spray the mixture over the exterior of your car - use the pressure setting of around 90 bar (Nilfisk Core setting 3). This foam detergent will help to pull off the thicker pieces of mud from your car, making it easier to clean whilst avoiding any scratches to the paintwork. Step 2 – Rinse off the foam from your car Leave the foam on your car for 5 minutes and then rinse off using the pressure setting of 90 bar and a gentle nozzle on your high pressure washer before it dries. Remember to rinse from top to bottom so that the dirt doesn’t drip down over the parts of the car that you already cleaned! Step 3 – Wash your car with soap Use either a mixture of soap and water mixture or car shampoo to clean your car, you can add this into the detergent bottle and spray all over the exterior. Then, use either a hand cloth or the brush accessory on your high pressure washer to wipe away any particular dirty areas on your car. Don’t forget to clean from top to bottom as the dirtier areas are more likely to be base of your car. Step 4 – Rinse off the car shampoo/soap mixture After another 5 minutes, use the setting of 90 bars on your high pressure washer to rinse the mixture off - this is even more important if the sun is out because otherwise the soap will dry onto your car leaving marks. Step 5 (optional) – Wax your car To get that extra squeaky clean look on your car, use car wax as a final touch. We recommend using the detergent bottle to spray it over the exterior and leave for a further 5 mins before drying off. Step 6 – Dry off your car Once the soap has rinsed away you can either let your car dry naturally or wipe down with a microfibre towel. And there you have it, a beautifully cleaned car done right from the comfort of your home!

Maintaining your pressure washer is important to ensure that it functions properly and lasts for as long as possible. Here are some tips to help you keep your pressure washer in top condition: 1. Use the right cleaning solution: Different surfaces require different detergents, so be sure to use the right one for the job. For example, you can use a detergent specifically designed for pressure washers to clean your car, while a different one for your patio cleaner accessory. 2. Avoid freezing temperatures: Pressure washers should not be used in freezing temperatures, as the water inside the pump can freeze and cause damage. Luckily Nilfisk products have an aluminium pump and are at less risk of breaking in freezing temperatures. If you need to use your pressure washer in cold weather, be sure to use a solution that is designed to prevent your pressure washer from freezing. 3. Store the pressure washer properly: When not in use, be sure to store your pressure washer in a dry, indoor location. This will help prevent rust and other forms of damage. 4. Keep the nozzles clean: The nozzles on your pressure washer can easily become clogged with debris, which can reduce the pressure of the water and make it less effective. Be sure to regularly clean the nozzle to keep it in good working condition. Nilfisk pressure washers all come with a nozzle cleaning needle, so make good use of it! 5. Replace worn out parts: Over time, the various parts of your pressure washer will wear out and need to be replaced. This is especially true for the high-pressure hose, which is subject to a lot of wear and tear over many years. Be sure to regularly inspect your pressure washer for any worn out parts and replace them as needed. Nilfisk offers a range of replacement and spare parts for pressure washers. By following these tips, you can help ensure that your pressure washer stays in good working condition and continues to function properly for a long time.
Read moreHow to Clean Wooden Decking with a Pressure Washer
Wooden decking is a great addition to any outdoor space, but over time, dirt, moss, and algae can build up, making it look dull and even slippery. Regular cleaning with a pressure washer is the most effective way to restore your decking’s natural beauty and keep it safe to use. Follow these steps for the best results. Prepare Your Decking Before using a pressure washer, remove any furniture, planters, or other objects from the decking. Sweep or vacuum with a wet and dry, any loose dirt, leaves, and debris to ensure an even clean. Choose the Right Pressure Washer setting and nozzle For wooden decking, use a pressure washer with an adjustable setting, ideally on level 2 (between 50-70 working bar pressure) to avoid damaging the wood. A gentle nozzle is recommended, as it provides a gentle but effective clean without risk of damaging the paintwork. Apply a Detergent Using a detergent specifically designed for wooden surfaces such as the stone and wood cleaner helps break down grime, and mildew. Apply the detergent with the pressure washer’s foam sprayer, then let it sit for 5-10 minutes to loosen dirt. Wash the Decking Hold the pressure washer 30-50 cm away from the surface and move in long, even strokes, following the direction of the wood grain. Avoid holding the spray in one spot for too long to prevent gouging the wood. Test on a small, hidden area first to ensure the pressure setting is safe for your decking. Rinse Thoroughly After cleaning, rinse the deck with clean water to remove any leftover detergent or dirt. Ensure that all soap residue is washed away to prevent slipperiness. Allow to Dry & Apply a Protective Finish Let the decking dry completely (at least 24-48 hours) before placing furniture back. To protect the wood and prolong its life, consider applying a wood sealant or oil after cleaning. Tips for Avoiding Damage to Wood and Its Treatment Use a lower pressure setting to prevent splintering or stripping the wood finish. Keep the nozzle moving—never hold it in one spot too long. Follow the grain of the wood to avoid visible streaks or damage. Use a detergent made for wood to clean effectively without harsh chemicals. Apply a protective sealant after cleaning to restore and protect the surface. Tips for Maintaining Your Wooden Decking Sweep regularly to prevent dirt buildup. Clean with a pressure washer at least once a year. Avoid using high-pressure settings that may damage the wood. Apply a protective sealant annually to extend the lifespan of your decking. By following these steps, you can keep your wooden decking looking fresh and inviting all year round. Happy cleaning!
